General Counsel Search
The State Bar Board of Directors voted unanimously in January 2018 to approve the hiring of a general counsel. The board’s General Counsel Search Committee developed and approved a Request for Proposals (RFP), which was issued on February 20 and emailed to bar members.
The deadline for proposals to be submitted was 5 p.m. CST on March 12. The committee received 12 proposals by the deadline.
The committee met March 20 and selected six respondents to interview for the position.
The committee later narrowed its short list from six to three candidates before voting by acclamation on May 7 to recommend to the State Bar board Ross Fischer of Austin as general counsel. The board, which elects the general counsel by a majority vote, will consider the recommendation at an open meeting on June 20 in Houston.
Fischer is an attorney with the Gober Group who specializes in legislative and campaign law, professional ethics, and government integrity matters. His clients include elected officials, candidates, trade associations, political committees, local governments, municipalities, and corporations. A graduate of the University of Texas School of Law, he is regularly called upon to advise public entities on matters involving legislative law, public integrity, and campaign and election procedures.
