Houston Hosts State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting
HOUSTON — The State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting will take place in Houston on June 14–15, 2012, at the George R. Brown Convention Center and Hilton Americas Houston. Featured speakers will include the following:
- James A. Baker III, the former U.S. Secretary of State under President George H.W. Bush
- Marshawn Evans, an entertainment attorney who appeared on NBC’s The Apprentice
- Richard North Patterson, best-selling author of Fall From Grace
- Hon. Annise Parker, Mayor of the City of Houston
In addition to two full days of continuing legal education for attorneys, the public sector is invited to attend two free open government panel discussions on Friday, June 15.
Special events include a display of historical Texas court records recently preserved through the efforts of the State Bar of Texas and the Texas Supreme Court’s Texas Court Records Preservation Task Force. A reenactment of the important 1869 U.S. Supreme Court case Texas v. White will take place at the historic Harris County Courthouse on Friday, June 15, at 2 p.m. Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Wallace B. Jefferson will lead a panel of distinguished Texas Supreme Court and federal judges in hearing the reenactment.
Buck Files of Tyler will be sworn in as president of the State Bar of Texas and outgoing president Bob Black of Beaumont will celebrate his successful year. Lisa M. Tatum of San Antonio will become president-elect.
C.E. Rhodes of Houston will be sworn in as president of the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA), assuming the leadership role from Natalie Cobb Koehler of Meridian. Kristy Piazza Blanchard of Plano will become TYLA president-elect.
