National Speakers Head to Dallas for State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting
DALLAS – Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin is confirmed as the keynote speaker of the 2009 State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting, to be held June 25-26 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. Goodwin is part of a lineup of speakers that includes such legal luminaries as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, New York Times columnist David Brooks, Southern Poverty Law Center founder Morris Dees, former FBI director William S. Sessions, and ExxonMobil general counsel Charles W. Matthews.
A panel of law school deans – Larry Sager, University of Texas School of Law, John Attanasio, Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, Brad Toben, Baylor Law School, and Ken Starr, Pepperdine Law School – will discuss the future of the legal profession in a session moderated by ESPN legal analyst Roger Cossack.
Media and the public sector are encouraged to attend free panel discussions on current issues surrounding the Texas Public Information Act and Open Meetings Act, how journalists will cover the legal profession in the future, and an update on developments from the regular session of the 81st Texas Legislature.
Roland Johnson of Fort Worth will be sworn in as State Bar president, assuming the leadership role from Harper Estes of Midland. Terry Tottenham of Austin will become president-elect. Cori Harbour of El Paso will replace Sylvia Cardona of San Antonio as president of the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA). Jennifer Evans Morris of Dallas will become TYLA president-elect. Awards acknowledging excellence in service to the public and to the legal profession will also be presented.
